Oldham vs Everton Betting Preview
The week of cup football continues this weekend with the FA Cup Fourth Round Replays and Fifth Round ties. For Oldham this means another 90 minutes of football against Premiership opposition, hoping they can knock out a second team from the city of Liverpool in succession. Meanwhile, Everton will be aiming to reach the Sixth Round for a second successive season and ensure that they don't face the same fate as cross-city rivals Liverpool, who were beaten 3-2 by Oldham in the Fourth Round. It is a step away from the struggle of a League One relegation battle for the underdogs, who before last weekend hadn't won in nine league games. Everton have also struggled lately, winning just one of their last five games, including three draws.
Oldham's FA Cup Results:
Oldham 3-2 Liverpool ( Smith (x2), Wabara ) Nottingham Forest 2-3 Oldham ( Simpson (x2), Baxter ) Oldham 3-1 Doncaster ( Wabara, Derbyshire (x2) ) Kidderminster 0-2 Oldham ( Montano, Baxter )
Oldham have had a difficult season so far but have been given a new lease of life with their current FA Cup run. Although Paul Dickov left the club at the beginning of the month, he led Oldham to two cup upsets, first away to Championship side Nottingham Forest in the Third Round, and second against English football giants Liverpool.
Following their win over MK Dons on Saturday, Oldham go into this game full of confidence and will be boosted by the news that Matt Smith may return to the side after injury. Smith scored two goals in the victory over Liverpool but hasn't played since.
In the last three rounds Oldham have scored three goals on each occasion, as well as having a player score twice three times. Smith is 25/1 to score twice again, whilst Robbie Simpson is 33/1 to score two or more goals.
Everton's FA Cup Results:
Bolton 1-2 Everton ( Pienaar, Heitinga ) Cheltenham 1-5 Everton ( Jelavic, Baines (pen), Osman, Coleman, Fellaini )
Everton had to wait until the 91 st minute to dump Bolton out of the FA Cup in the previous round and face lower opposition for the third time in the competition. Everton's defeat to Manchester United was only their second since November, both coming against top three Premier League teams.
Veteran defender Sylvain Distin could return to the starting eleven following illness but Victor Anichebe is a doubt after injury on Sunday.
All Everton's goals have been scored by different players so far this FA Cup campaign but they have failed to score in three of their last six games. Marouane Fellaini, who received a three match ban for head-butting Ryan Shawcross in December, has had an excellent season. With rumours that Chelsea may be interested in the Belgian midfielder, he may star in front of the cameras once again - he is best priced at 21/20 with bet365 to score anytime.
Oldham have previously knocked Everton out of the FA Cup three times, most recently in 2008 when they knocked the Premier League side out in the Third Round 1-0. From the 40 head-to-head matches between the two sides, both clubs have won 14 apiece. Everton haven't beaten the Latics in the FA Cup since 1912 and with home advantage on Saturday, Oldham could at least prevent Everton progressing at the first attempt. A draw is best priced with bet365 at 9/2 .
Everton have only kept a clean sheet in 3 of their last 15 FA Cup matches and have conceded a single goal in both of their ties this year. There have been a total of 25 goals in the games involving the two teams in the FA Cup this season, averaging over 4 goals a game. Both teams to score is evens with Boylesports , whilst over 3.5 goals in the game is best priced at 8/5 with Stan James .
The FA Cup is renowned for its upsets and Oldham have a great chance to do the 'giant killing' once again on Saturday. Although Everton may well end up making it through to the Sixth Round, Oldham could pull off a draw and earn themselves a trip to Goodison Park for the replay.
Prediction: Oldham 2-2 Everton - Best priced at 25/1 with Betfred , Coral and Totesport .
